As with many of Five Flavors Herbs proprietary formulas, Poison Oak and Ivy Liniment draws from formulaic traditions from East Asia and traditional applications of herbs from North America. Grindelia and Yerba Santa have been paired for a variety of ailments by native people, Eclectic physicians, and contemporary herbalists for such diverse health concerns as difficulty breathing with congestion, urinary irritation, and as in this formula, when one succumbs to an immune response associated with contact with Rhus toxicodendron and related species. Sophora, Cnidium, and goldenseal (as a domestic substitute for phellodendron bark [Huang Bai]) make up the Chinese formula Sophora Decoction, which is used as a rudiment for dampness and heat, a useful way to describe the moist and weepy rash that accompanies an outbreak.*
